Summertime Skin Care Essentials

I hope everyone is enjoying a beautiful summer filled with fun and relaxation. This season in particular is one of my favorites because of what Mother Nature has to offer. If I'm not in my studio, I am either at the ocean or in my garden observing all of the wildlife around me. The summer sunshine seems to make everyone and everything a little more happier and brighter (thank you vitamin D). The birds are chirping, dragonflies and butterflies are dancing everywhere, and plants and flowers are gracing us with their gorgeous colors and fragrances.

With this desire to be out in the sun, we must remember not to forget our sun protection and how vulnerable our skin can be this season. As much as the sun itself is vital for vitamin D production in the skin (only when exposed to in small 10-15 minute doses a few times a week when the sun is not at its peak), the UV rays strip our skin of its moisture and deplete antioxidants. This depletion inflames our body, causing free radicals that may result in burning, DNA damage (including wrinkles, age spots, breakdown of collagen), and skin cancer.

This season is all about PROTECT AND PREVENT. Antioxidants are the first line of defense against damaging UV rays. Staying hydrated, wearing a non nano Zinc SPF (see below), and increasing your antioxidant intake through seasonal foods (see below), drinks and topicals (i.e. Laurel) will do much to support the skin during this challenging season.

Laurel's New Look + Formula Changes

-A letter from Laurel

"Why would we change our formulas when they were already loved by so many? This is such a good question, and I am going to answer this incredibly honestly. The truth is that science, including plant science and herbalism, is always moving forward and new information is constantly emerging. I love continued education, and I try to go to plant medicine conferences each year, keep up with herbalism journals, studies and research, and immerse myself in the world of skin and learn from every industry professional I meet.

It would be dishonest and lacking in integrity of me if I didn’t use that knowledge to improve our formulas if I am able to do so. Eight of our formulas have been altered, but that means there are 20 formulas that have not changed. Those eight were obvious improvements I could make, so I did.

The updated formulas have been in the works for three years. They have been tested by myself during this time, my internal team, and a dozen of our esthetician partners as well as their own clients in treatment. I collect feedback and go back to the drawing board each time, again and again, until I hear lots of positive results across the board from everyone. I share this so that you can trust that you will be in good hands with our new formulas, as they have been tested at length for efficacy.

The formulas we have updated significantly are:

Hydrating Elixir I: Phytonutrient Replenish (formerly Normal/Mature Elixir)

Hydrating Elixir II: Support + Recover (formerly Oily/Combination Elixir)

Honey Berry Mask: Radiant Glow

Gentle Mask: Hydrating Recovery

Antioxidant Mask: Vibrancy Revival

California Body Oil: Bare Heart

The formulas that we have updated just an ingredient or two are:

Unburden Serum: Deep Tranquility (formerly Anti-Inflammatory Serum)

Balance Serum: Clarifying Relief

Please see each individual product page to learn what has changed in the formulas above.

Why did we change some of our product names?

First of all, for our regular customers, I’m sorry. I completely understand that changing names is confusing and even annoying, and that is never our intent. We did this for two reasons. The first is to be compliant with the FDA, the EU, and Health Canada – we couldn’t use certain words like Healing or Anti-Inflammatory.

The second reason is that the terms normal/dry, normal/mature, and oily/combination really didn’t do those particular products justice. Skin health is simply not that black and white as to being broken down into categories in that way. It is far more complicated than that. No matter your skin type or concern we have a product for you, but you might need to reach out to us or read the product copy to figure our which one that is. Or better yet, see one of our partnering estheticians.

Thank you for going on this journey with me. I completely understand that it can be confusing and uneasy. Are we still the same?? Just as pure? Just as effective? I can assure you that we are. I am still the one driving this bus! But because I’m the one at the wheel I have to keep making decisions from a place of honestly, integrity, and love as I evolve myself as an individual. Your skin health is still and will always be my first priority, and I am confident that intention will shine through with all these changes we have made."
